Selecting the Right Dog Boots for Your Beloved Pup

There are so many reasons to consider boots for dogs

  • protection from hot pavement
  • chemicals and salt used for ice melt
  • ice and snow build-up on paws
  • warmth in cold climates
  • traction on slippery surfaces and on rainy days
  • keeping paws clean
  • protection and traction on hiking trails
  • general protection of dogs’ sensitive paws

Dog boots are often overlooked, but many consider them a very important accessory to consider for your pup’s health and well-being. Here is a little more information about why they are recommended.

Hot pavement: A dog’s paws are extremely sensitive. They can easily be burned from hot concrete and asphalt. Boots should have a rugged, non-slip sole.

Ice-melt chemicals & antifreeze: These chemicals can irritate and damage paw pads, and when dogs lick their feet, they can ingest harmful chemicals. Antifreeze can be deadly.

Ice and snow build-up: Impacted snow and ice can be painful and interfere with a dog’s enjoyment romping in the snow!

Warmth: The lining in winter boots will keep sensitive feet warm for winter walks and provide protection from the elements.

Traction: Ice, smooth surfaces, and wet tile can all present a slipping hazard in snowy or rainy weather. This is especially dangerous for older dogs or dogs with mobility issues. The right boots can make walking easier and safer.

There are different boots for different needs, everything from insulated boots for warmth to waterproof boots for dogs. Dog rain boots with drainage and air holes prevent muddy and soggy paws, and who wants that? It’s important to choose the right boot for the right purpose.

Fitting dog boots: The single most important thing in buying boots is finding dog boots that stay on dogs’ feet. It’s necessary to measure your dog’s feet accurately. If you can try on the boots before purchasing, that’s extremely helpful. As with our own shoes, you want a fit that is secure for stability and comfort, but not too tight. Boots should stay on but not constrict the feet or ankles. Also, monitor your dog as he or she walks to be sure that the boots aren’t causing chafing or discomfort. Some of the best winter dog boots have an adjustable strap that can help with the fit. Some other features that can help with getting boots on and off include wide leg openings, pull tabs, and elastic.

Most dogs don’t take to boots naturally! Boots need to be introduced gradually in 5-15 minute increments in a relaxed indoor setting. Slowly increase the wear-time over a few weeks time, and be patient. Also, at first, associate boot wearing with playtime or something positive. Give praise and treats when they walk with their new boots. With time and positive reinforcement, boots will become part of their routine.
